Bird River
The Winnipeg River system through Lac du Bonnet is one of Manitoba's most productive and accessible multi-species fisheries. Year-round angling, free shore access, and a legendary ice fishing derby.
Six primary species inhabit the Lac du Bonnet waterway system, each with distinct seasonal patterns and preferred techniques.
The Winnipeg River is one of Manitoba’s premier walleye fisheries. Spring sees aggressive post-spawn feeding along shoreline structure. Fall walleye push into deeper pools near the Town Pier and along the Dike.
Lac du Bonnet lake and the rocky shorelines of the Winnipeg River hold excellent smallmouth populations. The Canadian Shield geology provides ideal habitat — submerged boulder fields, points, and drop-offs.
Pike are abundant in the weed beds and backwaters of the Winnipeg River. Early season fishing in shallow bays is often explosive. The Lee River mouth is a consistent producer for trophy-class northerns.
The Winnipeg River supports a healthy channel catfish population, with fish congregating near the dam and in deeper river holes. Night fishing from shore can be particularly productive during warm summer months.
Perch are the bread-and-butter species for ice anglers on Lac du Bonnet lake. Schools move between 15–25 feet of water over sand and gravel flats. They’re a favourite table fish and excellent for introducing kids to fishing.
A uniquely Manitoban species, goldeye are found throughout the Winnipeg River. They put up a spirited fight on light tackle and are traditionally smoked — Winnipeg goldeye is a regional delicacy dating back over a century.
From walk-up shore fishing at the Town Pier to boat-access-only structures on the Winnipeg River, there's water for every skill level.
The section of the Winnipeg River flowing through Lac du Bonnet is the backbone of local fishing. Deep pools, current seams, and rock structure hold walleye, bass, and pike through the open water season. Shore access is available at several points along River Road, and boat anglers can work the mid-river structures that produce consistently.
The Lee River enters the Winnipeg River just east of town and provides sheltered paddling water with excellent pike and bass habitat. The river mouth is a natural ambush point for predatory fish, and the upstream stretches offer quieter fishing in a more intimate setting. Canoe and kayak anglers do particularly well here.
The Town Pier offers free, walk-up shore fishing right in Lac du Bonnet. It’s one of the most accessible spots in the region and produces walleye, perch, and catfish regularly. Families with young children often start here — the pier is well-maintained and close to parking and amenities.
A local landmark, the Dike provides shore access to a stretch of the Winnipeg River with varied depth and current. Walleye concentrate here during fall migration, and it’s one of the more reliable spots for larger fish. Early morning and late evening are prime times.
The lake itself covers a substantial area with sand flats, weed beds, and rocky points. Boat anglers target smallmouth bass along the shield rock shorelines and walleye over sand-gravel transitions. In winter, the lake becomes the primary ice fishing destination, with perch and walleye the main targets.

A valid Manitoba angling licence is required for all residents and visitors aged 16 and older. Licences are available online through the Manitoba government website or at local vendors in Lac du Bonnet. Canadian residents can purchase a conservation or sport licence; non-residents require a non-resident sport licence.
Lac du Bonnet falls within Manitoba Fisheries Division 23. Key limits for the sport licence include:
Limits are subject to change. Always verify current regulations in the official Manitoba Angler's Guide before fishing.
When the lake freezes over in December, a second fishing season begins — and it culminates in one of Manitoba's largest ice fishing events.
Ice fishing on Lac du Bonnet lake typically runs from mid-December through late March, depending on conditions. Perch are the primary target on the lake, with walleye and pike also available. The Winnipeg River doesn't freeze reliably near town due to current, but the lake offers extensive safe ice in most winters.
Portable huts and auger rental are available from local operators. Many ice anglers set up on the sand flats in 15 to 25 feet of water, using small jigs tipped with minnow heads for perch and larger presentations for walleye.
The annual Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby is one of Manitoba's marquee winter events, drawing over 1,100 participants to the frozen lake each March. Prizes are awarded for the largest fish in several species categories, with significant cash payouts and raffle prizes.
The derby has a community festival atmosphere, with food vendors, warming tents, and a camaraderie that brings locals and visitors together. It's become a signature event for the town and a highlight of the winter season.
Several local guides operate on the Winnipeg River and Lac du Bonnet lake, offering half-day and full-day trips for walleye, bass, and pike. Guided trips are an excellent option if you're new to the area or want to fast-track your way to productive water. Guides provide the boat, tackle, and local knowledge — you bring the licence and enthusiasm.
Ask us for current recommendations when you book your stay, and we'll connect you with a guide who matches your experience level and target species.
